New Nuclear Fuel

Mixed oxide fuel (MOX), an experimental nuclear fuel made from surplus nuclear weapons, will be produced at the Savannah River Site upon the completion of the MOX Fuel Fabrication Facility. However, it is unclear whether nuclear operators like Duke Energy and SCE&G will use this potentially temperamental fuel. The Department of Energy’s only current, interested customer, the Tennessee Valley Authority, has scheduled hearings allowing the public to weigh in on the matter.
